Understanding UN ECE R158: The Regulatory Base for Reversing and Right-Turn Safety

UN ECE R158, mandatory for new vehicle types since 2022, requires a Rear-view Monitoring system (REIS) that detects objects directly behind the vehicle when reverse gear is engaged or during low-speed maneuvers, compensating for indirect-vision blind spots of conventional mirrors.

The regulation stresses usability across lighting, weather and road conditions, with clear, non-intrusive alerts. zerow T1 terminal integrates BSD, LCA lane-change assist and AOA rear monitoring. It detects rear objects while reversing and pairs a cabin buzzer with external sound-light warning, aligning with the regulation's rear-monitoring alert design.

In high-risk reversing and right-turn scenarios, the radar detects approaching vehicles, pedestrians and obstacles before the driver does, lowering collision probability via graded alerts. The solution fits retrofit and some OEM needs for vans and trucks, with CAN/alarm-line interfaces.
